The Rutgers football team will lose its Big East opener at West Virginia

2008 appears to be shaping up as one of the weakest seasons in the history of Big East football.  Yet, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights don’t seem to have the goods to take advantage of the mediocre landscape.  And that will become evident this coming Saturday when R-U plays its league opener at West Virginia.  No, right now, this is not one of those powerhouse Mountaineer teams…certainly not good enough four games into the campaign to warrant the media’s pre-season pick as the eventual Big East champion.  The ‘Neers are only 2-2 under new head coach Bill Stewart…and all-league quarterback Pat White is fighting a bruised thumb.  But this is still W-V-U we’re talking about and, in case you forgot, Rutgers has never won a game in Morgantown.  White completed 17 of 21 passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns and had 61 yards rushing in last Saturday’s 27-3 win at intra-state rival Marshall before injuring his thumb…a pretty good line on the road.  And his back-up, Jarrett Brown, was 5-for-7 for 44 yards and had 78 rushing yards.  Then you have the number-one featured back Noel Devine running for 125 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.  So, from an offensive skill position point-of-view, West Virginia appears to have more than enough to strike early and often against a medicore Rutgers defense, notwithstanding last Saturday’s 38-0 home win over lowly Morgan State.  As for the Mountaineer defense, it held the Thundering Herd to just 39 rushing yards and 158 yards of total offense.  So, the W-V-U “d” will be tough to crack for quarterback Mike Teel and Company.  Bottom line—Rutgers is a 14-point favorite on the road at a place it’s never won before and not playing the kind of consistent football needed to pull off a big upset.  West Virginia, on the other hand, is set to break out after a sluggish first four games under head coach Stewart.  So, I look for the Mountaineers to win going away Saturday…beating the Scarlet Knights 35-10…kicking off what will be a long Big East season for head coach Greg Schiano.

I thought RU was a 14 1/2 underdog in the UWV game not favored. But I agree with all of the remaining post. It’s mind boggling that as poorly as UWV has played under the new coach that a less than mediocre RU team could be favored in Morgantown. I believe RU is riding high at no. 64 right now up from no. 81 so the 14 1/2 points should be covered easily.

This is a game preseason that I thought RU would lose. Why would I change my mind after seeing what I am seeing on the field at this point? WVU is down right now but as a tradition that sticks RU, WVU will have their breakout game this week. Will I be surprised if RU wins in Morgantown this week?…….No…. I will be shocked.

    WVU 42
    RU 10

    I can see a shutout but I’m a homer.

I pity the folks who trecked to WVU this weekend.

Since there was no other place to send my message to,I’m doing it here. I have
been a long time RU fan of the football program,& I am more than disappointed
that I’ve been shut out of any chance to see the Scarlet Knights this season.
I have been told that there are no tickets available to the general public,& I
find it elitist, unfair,& very self-serving that the Athletic Dept. only cares about its’ season ticket holders. Since when does Rutgers do something like only take
care of season ticket holders,& not consider fans like me,who have supported
them for over 30 years? It so happens I am on a strict budget, & can’t afford
season tickets. Can’t they do something for someone like me?

Jeff….. you can always get tickets to the games at cost. If you are interested let me know and I’ll tell you how. I don’t think this forum is for that though.

jeff berrest….I agree and empathize with you completely. I had season tickets but live on a restricted income and have health issues too. When RU started to enforce the point system and aution parking passes to the highest bidder (seating fees to follow), I was frozen out and had to give up my ticket and my purple lot parking pass. I still follow the team on TV though. I’m sorry that RU is losing for the sake of the players but not for Schiano’s and Mulcahey’s sake though. Schiano’s extortion of the Univesity for compensation and stadium enhancements based on one decent season, the greed and rush to jump into big time football, the underhanded payments to Schiano, his arrogance and immaturity, the greed of the sports department and the attempted gouging of fans and the firing of Bruce Johnson. Mulcahey was a willing accomplice to his friend, Schiano. Mulcahey said that “Schiano would be here as long as he is here” so problem solved. Let Mulcahey retire gracefully, hire a new AD who knows how to build a big time football program and pay the coach what he’s worth without any shenanigans. Let him clean house and hire a coach who knows what he’s doing. Or, accept being a mid-major program and hire a coach at the average pay of the current mid level coaches. Leave the stadium staus quo. It’s fine for a mid-major program and drop the point system and the greed. Forget about being Penn State or Ohio State. Or, become a Playoff Subdivision program and schedule teams like Villanova etc.

If RU is commited to really being a big time program. Get a new AD, stop the stadium enhancements and the NYC connection (yes, I mean Carlin) until it’s proven that the new coach can sell out the stadium for three consecutive years with a competitive team. Ask him to win the BE and take us to a BCS Bowl, then enforce the point system, enlarge the stadium and go full bore. Right now, RU is an embarrassment.
