The Rutgers football team has a tough task Saturday afternoon when it plays a Big East game at Connecticut. R-U is 5-2 overall…0-2 in league…a eight-and-a-half-point underdog up in West Hartford. UConn comes in a 4-3 overall and 0-2 in league—a three-point loss at Pittsburgh and last Saturday’s emotional 28-24 loss at West Virginia, just one week after the campus murder of starting defensive back Jasper Howard. I’m picking the Huskies to win Saturday for two reasons—1) the emotions of UConn’s first home game since the Howard murder and 2) the fact that R-U true freshman quarterback Tom Savage will be making his first Big East road start in a very tough environment. So, I’m going Connecticut 24 Rutgers 14. Kick-off at Rentschler Field is high noon; air-time on WCTC for our pre-game show “Rutgers Gameday” is 10:30.

Coach Edsall’s squad will be emotional…their helmets adorned with initials “JH” in memory of Jasper T. Howard…armed on offense with a decent passing game, including a 6′6″ tight-end that could make the intermediate passing game a serious threat…however, I see RU going to Conn. with a sense of urgency…0-3 in conference? Not so in my view, as again, RU’s defense–with it’s 21 takeaways this season–should maul the Huskies…yes, I’m going with the Scarlet Knights in this one…31-17…a break out game for RU’s offense and a steady bend but don’t break game for the defense…RU’s most intrepid step thus far in ‘09.
Originally I was going with UConn preseason but things have changed. I’m not buying the emotional game. That was last week. They were spent big time. Not to take anything from the tragic event. You are right SAndrew. This game is too big for RU to go 3-0. The Rent has always been tough to play in as well as watch. The defense plays tough again and RU running game gets off. Remember, this UConn team is not that good.
